Let’s say you had 10 minutes with the VP of Engineering at a top tier Boston technology company — what would you ask?

Luckily for you, we did! We recently sat down (ahem, via Zoom) with Patrick Rubeski, VP of Engineering at Buildium and asked him some of the questions we’ve been dying to know.

What do you do here at Buildium? I run our technology and operations team.

What advice would you give to someone looking to work in Engineering?

Be curious. Constantly ask why things are done the way they are and challenge them. Take advantage of the different skill sets around you, coding is an art and has many different expressions — soak them all in. Go beyond just technical curiosity, study your industry and customers and understand that true innovation happens when you consider all three of these.

Be fearless. There is a lot of talk about Imposter Syndrome in Software Engineering and it’s important to understand that professional growth in this space is marked by periods of fast, intense learning followed by periods of slower skill development. Recognize where you are at, work to drive and challenge yourself along the way and remember the best lessons are learned from our biggest failures — trying and failing is always better than hesitating.

Have fun. Getting great in this space can be hard so never forget how empowered you felt when you wrote your first Hello Word!

How would your team members describe you? Ha — this one scares me a bit :). I think I would get equal parts, quiet and intense. I tend to try to be a “in the rear with the gear” type of guy, but when I sense that something isn’t working I can go after it like a pitbull.

How do you stay motivated? I surround myself with motivated people. If you want to be the best, you have to play with the best. It never ceases to amaze me how much you learn and motivate yourself simply by mixing it up with some smart and talented people!

What makes Buildium different from other tech companies? Well it’s cliche to say, but in my opinion the difference lies with the people. Buildium has such smart and driven people that it just brings the best out in you. There are a ton of other things Buildium nails, but it’s the people — it’s always the people.

What makes you excited to come to work every day? Right now it’s the energy in the office. I’ve been with Buildium for almost five years and there has always been a great vibe here, but right now it feels like everything is firing on all cylinders. You can literally feel a buzz in the office, and that’s pretty cool.
